Too Long; Didn’t Read
Epic pushes the envelope with its latest Unreal Engine 5.
If you didn’t grow up in the ’80s and ’90s, then it’s pretty hard to convey the awesomeness that was the arcades. When you stepped inside one, it was like walking inside a strange world filled with dazzling arrays of lights that rivaled the great casino halls of Las Vegas.
The constant humming sound emanating from each cabinet would then be followed by plenty of swooshes, pings, and other oddball sound effects that on occasion, be drowned out by the cheers of players lining up to get their chance to play against each other. The arcades were not just a place to play games, it was also a social gathering waterhole for anyone looking to simply hang out and have a good time without spending a lot of money. Unlike the story-driven games of today, arcades challenged you to play for as long as your skills and abilities would allow – all with a single quarter.
Even the cover is of high-quality design
Sadly, with the introduction of the home consoles, the arcades started to slowly fade away, and with it, a large chunk of our childhood memories. That’s why I was very pleased to receive the Artcade Edition Book of Classic Game Arts in the mail by New Wave Toys. The artbook book boasts some 356 pages of high-quality images printed on glossy lithographic print and paper. The artwork is absolutely phenomenal with sharp vibrant colors that give each page a high-resolution shine to it. Every image is an exact replica of the ones used on each cabinet. While the artwork is the obvious focus, there are plenty of gaming details and passages that add insight into the designs of these particular decals.
The stories are a great read and the pictures alone are worth the price of admission. It is an amazing assortment of nostalgia finely crafted into an attractive package. If you love the classic arcade games of yesteryear, do me a favor and pick up one to add to your collection. You won’t be disappointed.
