Too Long; Didn’t Read

Epic pushes the envelope with its latest Unreal Engine 5.

It wasn’t that long ago that we were asking ourselves what the future held for 3D graphics once the Playstation 5 and the Xbox Series X hit the market this Holiday season. Well, we don’t have to imagine much longer as Epic Games recently released a tech demo of their Unreal Engine 5.  Keep in mind that the hardware used to showcase the demo was powered by several PC components to run on a PS5 development kit. While the UE5 is not proprietary to the PS5 or XBOX X, it should give a realistic picture of what gaming on the consoles (and PC) is going to offer.

Two new core technologies will debut with the UE5: Nanite Virtualized Geometry and the Lumen Illuminator. Without boring you to death with all the technical jargon, just know that whatever game uses this engine, it’s probably going to look insanely good.

The Unreal Engine 5 makes everything so lifelike

But the lingering question is what type of PC graphics card is needed to run this bad boy at 4K resolution and at a consistent 60+ frames per second (FPS). With the game engine rendering almost a billion triangles a second, even top of the line RTX 2080 cards may have a hard time keeping up.

But don’t despair just yet. Remember that it took almost a year or two before games were optimized for the Unreal Engine 4. So by the time we see games looking like the demo above, more powerful video cards will already be out. I just wish people would stop playing Fortnite so Epic can get to work on the next Unreal Tournament.
